Mudbox: Final

After finishing this off before I go nuts and destroy I feel as if I could have done better, keeping one thing in mind that this is my first attempt at sculpting something using Mudbox I'm fairly happy with the result, time will always be the key thing to these projects and one of which I didn't use properly with the Mudbox project. Overall though I only hope to think that when people look at the sculpt and the reference photo of Kai they see the likeliness. I will not stop using Mudbox and I hope to improve my skills over time, learn from my mistakes and just keep going.

Mudbox: Topology turntable

This is the topology painted on top of the sculpt.

Mudbox: Progress 3

I have tried my best at the hair but due to form and shape of the hair on the top at the front of the head i have found it very difficult to create something that is very alike, now the sculpt may not look like Kai exactly but this because 1)I found it very hard to get the overall shape and form of his face and 2)the hair was just a pain in the arse.

And so here is the finished product

Mudbox: Progress 2

From here on out if I change anything now it'll be minor tweaks, me and mudbox don't necessarily get on well but I kept trying and trying to get it right and this is what I have accomplished so far, I'm pretty happy with it but I know it'll take time to get better with mudbox.

Mudbox: Topology

now added the topology to the mudbox version

Topology: Re-done

got rid of any triangle polys

Mudbox: Getting there

Mudbox: frustration

When I first started using mudbox I found it to be quite fun, creating and sculpting a model head and seeing where my creativity takes me, however after having used it for some time now I have grown frustration over using it and just can't  get the hang of it, I'm not that very good at drawing people and faces let alone trying to sculpt them, non the less I will not give up on trying to sculpt a head that looks like my friend Kai. Most problems I find is just simply trying to get the structure of the head right, I can't seem to get it just right so it looks like him. Here is the reference photo that I am working from:

Now as you can see I have a fair few reference photos to work from so obviously it should be easier for me to work with. I have 2 heads that I have created to see which one looks more like him with the overall structure, here they are:

As you can see the left the one is slightly too wide but the lips are a bit better than the one the right, the nose is wonky on the right and possibly too big on the left, if I can just get them to meet up in the middle then I may be able to create something that will look like Kai, until then it's just a case of keeping on tweaking and try to sculpt it right.

Topology; What is it?

EdgeLoop1.jpg
I'm finding it really hard to describe topology as everyone uses different methods to map out the face and it's key elements.  It's simply mapping out the face and its features and how its seen, this uses certain patterns and loops of the face, I found this picture [1] somewhat helpful and mapping out the loops on a face;

Here is what i have done to Kai's face, my model, using topology;
